I. Pig Nutrition Division

Research goals are nutrition of pigs of all categories. It is the only workplace in the Czech Republic where serious studies of sow nutrition, and historically of gilt and boar nutrition, have been made (NAVRÁTIL, ZEMAN, PROKOP). The scope of work is specifications of nutrient and energy requirements in pigs and of the criteria of feed nutritive values. Principles of feed formulation optimization for fattened pigs were laid down in this division, especially with respect to utilization of synthetic amino acids (NAVRÁTIL, ŠIMEČEK, VLČEK). The workplace is also a historical center for feed evaluation in energetic terms and for evaluation of energy requirements in pigs (ŠIMEČEK, ZEMAN). Research has also been focused on nutritive values and feeding use of important feeds, namely fodder yeasts, rape feeds, grains and thermally treated feeds (PROKOP, ŠIMEČEK, ŠIŠKE).

Ing. Karel Šimeček, CSc.,

l2th April 1932, has been working in the institute since 1960, Head of the Division, the institute's prominent researcher. His lifetime professional career has been devoted to pig nutrition. He laid down the principles of feed science in this country in the early sixties, mainly by collecting data for optimization of feed formulations for fattened pigs in which synthetic amino acids were used. He developed a system of energetic evaluation of feeds for pigs. In recent years, he has extended data on nutritive values of some feeds and nutrient requirements of growing piglets by data on ileal true digestibility of amino acids and their needs. He is Chairman of Nutrition Commission of the Czech Academy of Agticultural Sciences, and he has written 216 scientific papers and specialized pubtications.

Ing Vít Prokop, DrSc.,

* l6th July 1942, has been working in the institute since 1975, a prominent researcher and specialist well-known in this country as well as abroad. His professional career has mostly been devoted to the proteinaceous nutrition of growing pigs, he determined amino acid requirements of boars as a member of the team, he also participates in feed formulation projccts especially those related to feed mixtures for piglets. He is Chairman of the Board of Editors of the Czech Journal of Animal Science, a member of the Commission for PhD Studies at Mendel Agricultural and Forestry University at Brno. He was awarded the prestigious prize ASA - USA for 1991. He has written 245 scientific works and specialized publications.
